RE: No Crash Test Required for SPINHEAD™ Safety Alert Signage
Your SPINHEAD™ safety signage is designed for short-term use at special events involving bicycles. Your signage is expected to be set up and taken down within a reasonable amount of time that coincides with the operation of organized events such as rides, tours, and races. It is my contention that MUTCD criteria does not apply to this safety signage and is therefore not required to undergo crash testing. Appropriate consideration should always be given to roadside safety of the cyclists and motorists. FHWA recognizes that the responsible jurisdiction for the roadway may require that this safety device or any other event support item be crash tested. However, FHWA also recognizes that special events involving cycling often place temporary signs, banners, decorative ornaments, markings, tents, tables, chairs, and watering stations along a given roadway whereby such related items are not required to be crashworthy.
